SUN, WIND & AIR ~
|
What happens when you take your camera out of the classroom and onto the water?
Join me for a fun, hands-on photography workshop focused on understanding your camera settings and learning how to photograph changing light, movement and outdoor conditions.
You'll spend the first part of the workshop learning and practicing the techniques you'll need—and then we'll take everything we've learned out into the field for a special sailboat ride photographing experience.
LECTURE • time 1-3:25 at SEE Shore Photography studio (directions)
☀️ Sun — working with bright, changing natural light and controlling exposure
💨 Wind — freezing movement or intentionally creating motion blur
🌊 Air & Water — photographing reflections, clouds, distance and sailboat
You'll learn shutter speed, aperture, ISO, exposure compensation and metering, while learning why and when to change those settings.
The goal isn't simply to memorize settings—it's to become more comfortable looking at a scene and knowing what your camera needs.
FIELD TRIP ON A SAILBOAT ON MERRIMACK RIVER NEWBURYPORT • Time 3:30-5:30
The field-trip portion of the workshop will take us aboard tender to a beautiful sailboat, launching right across the street at the Yacht Club in Newburyport, where we'll put everything we've learned into practice.
For the field trip portion of the workshop, we'll climb aboard a beautiful sailboat owned by Captain Mathew and Hanna Keily Green.
Their boat will become our floating classroom and photography studio.
Once we're on the water, we'll have a constantly changing environment to photograph--sails, rigging, water, reflections, coastline, boats, clouds, movement and changing light.
You'll have the opportunity to experiment with your settings while I'm there to help you make adjustments and answer questions along the way.
The experience isn't simply a sailboat ride where you happen to bring your camera.
It's a photography field trip designed to put your skills into practice.
You'll photograph the same subjects using different settings, experiment with shutter speeds, work with changing light and look for creative compositions from a completely different perspective.
By the end of the day, you'll have had the chance to experience firsthand how sun, wind and air can change the way you photograph.
Hanna is actually a former photography student of mine and took these sailboat photos, and she is a nurse. Today she and Mat, who is also a salvage diver on a tow boat, enjoy life on the water aboard their beautiful sailboat.
The teacher and owner, Kelly Mintz is an accomplished professional photographer and educator with a Master's in Education.
