Classic Wheels & Coastal Vibes: Retro Car Photography at the Marsh & Beach

Kelly is a Newburyport, MA based
art studio focused
on teaching photography to all ages and levels.

Workshop Name: "Classic Wheels & Coastal Vibes: Retro Car Photography at the Marsh & Beach"
Concept:Participants will learn to capture the beauty of vintage cars set against the dramatic, ever-changing backdrops of a marsh or beach. The focus will be on blending the retro charm of the cars with the natural, serene landscapes, resulting in timeless, cinematic images.
Elements to Include:
  1. Setting the Scene:
    • Marshlands: The contrast of a rusty vintage car against the soft greens and yellows of the marsh, with tall grass and wildflowers in the background. Sunsets or foggy mornings would add an ethereal touch.
    • Beach: The juxtaposition of an old car against crashing waves, sand dunes, or driftwood. A golden hour shoot can produce warm, dreamy light, enhancing the retro vibe.
  2. Lighting Techniques:
    • Teach the use of natural light, especially during the golden hour, to highlight the curves and details of the cars.
    • Explore low-key lighting for moody, atmospheric shots or backlighting to create silhouettes of the cars against the ocean or sky.
  3. Camera Angles & Composition:
    • Focus on wide-angle shots to capture both the car and the vast scenery.
    • Close-ups on chrome details, headlights, or the tires, emphasizing textures and the car’s age.
    • Play with reflections, using puddles or wet sand at the beach to mirror the car.
  4. Car Styling:
    • Consider styling the cars with props that fit the era: surfboards, vintage suitcases, or retro beach towels.
    • If possible, include people (models dressed in period-appropriate clothes) to evoke the spirit of the 50s or 60s.
  5. Workshop Schedule:
    • Introduction: Discuss vintage car photography basics (camera settings, framing, etc.).
    • On-location Shoot: Divide participants into groups for hands-on shooting sessions at the marsh or beach. Instruct on angles, composition, and lighting.
    • Editing Tips: After the shoot, teach basic photo editing to enhance the retro vibe (like adding filters or adjusting contrast).
    • Showcase & Feedback: End with a group review of the photos and provide constructive feedback.
Additional Tips:
  • Timing: Depending on the weather and light, schedule the shoot during the golden hour (early morning or late afternoon) to get that soft, warm glow.
  • Location Scouting: Find a marsh or beach with wide open spaces, interesting textures, and natural elements like rocks, driftwood, or marsh grasses.

We love new projects!
Let's get started.

In this Retro Car Photography at the Marsh & Beach workshop, students would dive deep into both technical and artistic aspects of photography. Here's what they would learn throughout the session:
1. Understanding Light and Its Effect on Retro Cars
  • Natural Light Mastery: Students will learn to use the sun as their primary light source. They'll explore how to capture the warm, golden light during the "golden hour" and how to use shadows to emphasize the curves and details of retro cars.
  • Backlighting and Silhouettes: They'll practice shooting into the light to create striking silhouettes of the cars against the beach or marsh backdrop.
  • Low-Key and High-Key Lighting: Techniques for creating dramatic, moody shots in low light conditions (e.g., foggy mornings) or bright, high-contrast scenes, using the natural elements to their advantage.
2. Mastering Composition
  • Rule of Thirds & Leading Lines: They'll learn how to frame their shot with classic composition rules, such as the Rule of Thirds and using leading lines (like a winding road or shoreline) to draw the viewer's eye to the car.
  • Wide Shots vs. Close-ups: Students will experiment with wide shots that incorporate both the car and the expansive landscape as well as close-ups of intricate details like chrome accents, the dashboard, or the texture of the wheels.
  • Reflections and Symmetry: They'll learn to find reflections in wet sand, puddles, or glass windows of the car, using these to create symmetry and add artistic depth to their photos.
3. Shooting Techniques
  • Angle Exploration: Students will explore various camera angles, from shooting from low angles to emphasize the power and grandeur of the car, to overhead shots that highlight the layout of the scene.
  • Depth of Field: They'll experiment with shallow depth of field to isolate the car against a blurred background or use wide depth of field to keep both the car and background in sharp focus.
  • Motion Blur: In case the beach or marsh environment has movement (like the car driving or waves crashing), students will learn how to capture dynamic motion through slow shutter speeds, adding an element of energy to the images.
4. Color and Tone Management
  • Achieving a Vintage Look: Techniques for editing photos in post-production to create a retro or nostalgic look. This could include adding warm tones, increasing contrast, or applying filters to mimic the feel of old film photography.
  • Enhancing the Landscape’s Mood: Students will learn how to adjust color balance and saturation to complement the car’s colors and the natural environment. They’ll also focus on enhancing skies, beach sand, or marsh grasses for that perfect vibe.
  • Creating a Story Through Color: Students will be taught to use colors strategically to create a specific mood or time period. For example, how warm or sepia tones can evoke a 60s summer vibe.
5. Working with Models & Props (Optional)
  • Posing Models: If models are included (such as people dressed in vintage outfits), students will learn how to pose them in a natural yet styled way, ensuring the models and the car complement each other.
  • Using Props Creatively: The use of props like surfboards, vintage suitcases, or beach towels to add storytelling elements to their shots.
6. Practical Skills and Technical Settings
  • Camera Settings: Understanding the relationship between aperture, shutter speed, and ISO to properly expose a shot in varying light conditions. Students will also get tips on how to adjust settings based on the time of day and the particular mood they wish to create.
  • Focus Techniques: How to achieve tack-sharp focus on the car while blurring the background (or vice versa) by selecting the right focal points and apertures.
  • Working with Raw Files: If applicable, students will learn how to work with RAW files for more flexibility in editing, allowing them to extract more detail and color from their photos.
7. Post-Processing Techniques
  • Editing in Lightroom/Photoshop: A section of the workshop dedicated to basic photo editing. Students will learn how to enhance colors, adjust exposure, and sharpen their images to achieve the final retro look.
  • Creating a Mood or Atmosphere: Techniques for enhancing mood through editing, such as adding a bit of grain for a film-like feel, adjusting contrast for a more dramatic shot, or fine-tuning colors to make them more vibrant or faded.
  • Using Presets: If they’re new to editing, the instructor might introduce some simple presets that can be used to enhance vintage vibes quickly.
8. Personal Style Development
  • Finding Your Artistic Voice: Throughout the workshop, students will be encouraged to experiment with different styles—whether they gravitate toward high-energy, dynamic shots or quieter, more contemplative images.
  • Building a Portfolio: Participants will learn how to create a small portfolio of their best shots, capturing the essence of the workshop through their personal lens.
9. Field Tips for Marsh/Beach Photography
  • Dealing with Natural Elements: Tips on protecting equipment from saltwater, sand, or humidity. How to work around difficult weather (like windy conditions) and take advantage of the lighting in the morning or late afternoon.
  • Environmental Awareness: How to photograph in a way that respects the environment, whether in marshland habitats or on the beach, avoiding any damage to the landscape or wildlife.
10. Final Showcase & Feedback
  • At the end of the workshop, students will have the opportunity to share their images with the group and receive constructive feedback from both the instructor and peers, learning how to improve their work and take their photography skills further.
This hands-on experience not only teaches the technical aspects of retro car photography but also helps students tap into their creativity, turning classic cars into living, breathing pieces of art. The unique combination of vintage cars and natural landscapes will allow them to develop their style, whether they’re beginners or more advanced photographers.
